Of the two ideas you presented this is the one that I like the most! I think the class photo idea and zoom in to reveal back story is a very good idea. It is something that would stand out and be unique - always a good thing. I would somehow try to interconnect the story as that would should the depth of thought you put into the idea which will go over well with the markers. When you do the back stories you could challenge some stereotypes e.g. the popular girl could be very lonely at home because her parents are either away a lot or ignore her. I would practice the zooming in and transition technique so you can see what works.
